Top 5 Wednesday-2018 Wishlist

This week’s topic on T5W is a 2018 wishlist.  In other words, what types of books I am hoping to see more of in the coming year.  This is a bit tougher than I originally thought it would be.  I like so many things and I read almost everything that I can almost find what I am in the mood for.  The book covers I’ve put with each wish are just some titles from that category that I loved. But here we go:

1. More stories about friendships, especially between boys and girls with no romance between the main characters.   

Not enough books in general focus on friendship of any kind, but I really do like a good book that has this as it’s focus.  They seem to be able to do it with kids books but not YA or adult.  Maybe publishers don’t think there is a market for it?  I think if there were more out there people would be willing to read them.

2. No More European Fairy Tale Retellings.

I’m probably going to be in the minority here, but I’m kind of done with the fairy tale retellings or almost any retelling based on a classic, at least of the more well known ones.  I don’t think I can handle another Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast this year.  Of course the ones based on non European stories would be awesome and I would be interested in those.  Or of course if they add dragons. 

3. Good solid science fiction for YA.

I think there may have been a slight up-tick in good science fiction for YA which I am hoping will continue.  Back when I was a teen there wasn’t such a thing as YA, so I read a lot of adult Sci-fi and just loved it.  Space travel is always a plus for me, but I will take anything that happens on a distant planet as well. 

4. More disturbingly dark thrillers

I really like my thrillers dark and disturbing, there is nothing better on a cold winter’s night than a book that sends shivers up my spine. There have been some excellent ones over the last couple of years and I hope to see many more in the future.

5. Morally ambiguous heroes and villains.

I like my characters well rounded and complex.  No one is good all the time or bad all the time.  Let’s shake it up a bit and have those heroes and villains think through their actions and judge themselves by societies morals.  But also make me like them at least a little bit.
