Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Lainey at GingerReads and Samantha at Thoughts on Tomes. You can find the group on Goodreads.
Top Five Favorite Magical Systems.
This is a fun topic, actually all of the topics for this month are fun and interesting. I can’t wait to see what other people come up with. It wasn’t very hard to come up with books for this week’s topic, though it was hard to narrow it down to five. I’ve linked the titles to my reviews and the pictures to their Goodread pages. Enjoy!
Give the Dark My Love by Beth Revis
This was the first book that popped into my head when I saw the topic, probably because it was a recent read for me. Loved the mix of science, alchemy and magic. The necromancy part was fascinating, especially the sacrifices required for it. A beautiful story about grief.
Shades of Magic series by V. E. Schwab
This is an interesting take on elemental magic. I liked that most people had an affinity for just one of the elements, but could also use others with some training. And I liked that some people also didn’t have any magic, but were not treated differently because of that.
Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody
I’m not sure this is technically a magical system, but I still found it fascinating. Everyone has a talent that is linked to their heritage. Sometimes it is a good talent like dancing, others are not so good.
Caraval and Legedary by Stephanie Garber
Again not sure we have a system here, it all seems to be controlled by one or two people. The magic used to create Caraval is very powerful and very important to the story. I liked some of the details used, like the dress that changed all with Scarlett’s moods and needs.
Roar by Cora Cormack
I really liked the magical system here based on controlling the weather. I don’t remember much else about the book, just the storms and the concept of storm hunters capturing the essence of a storm is pretty cool. I really hope that the next book is still coming out next year.
Those are my current favorite magical systems. As always stop by the GoodReads group to see what others have come up with.

The Magicians! I wasn’t happy with the ending of the series but that’s just how it goes sometimes.

I read the first two books but still have not gotten around to that third one. At this point I might have to start at the beginning again.

It took me awhile to get through the third one.

So glad to see Shades of Magic on this list. It would be on mine as well. The magic, the worlds, I just love what Schwab did with her series.
