The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. IT was relaunched on February 15, 2013 by Billy@Coffee Addicted Writer. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.
This week’s prompt is:
Do you listen to audiobooks? If so, do you prefer listening instead of reading? (submitted by Elizabeth @ Silver’s Reviews)
If you follow me at all, then you know that I do indeed listen to audiobooks. Quite frequently in fact. I quite like listening to someone read me a story, especially when they have a good voice and do a nice job with using different voices for different characters. I enjoy listening to books when I am doing just about anything that I don’t have to use a lot of brain power to do, such as walking, driving, cleaning the house, etc.
To answer the second half of the prompt, let me first say that listening to a book is no different than reading a book. It is not cheating, and it still counts as having ‘read’ the book. I have had many parents and teachers dismiss audiobooks as not reading, but I disagree. It is just as important a skill to listen to a story as it is to read it yourself. I would even say, in some ways it is harder than reading the book. But it also allows a kid to read above their level (whatever that means), and enjoy a book that they really want to read.
So, I would say that I equally enjoy reading and listening to books. I do both on a regular basis. I rarely read along with the story. I have occasionally listened to part of the book and then picked up the physical book for a few chapters. I do this sometimes when the audiobook is really long and I don’t have the time to listen to it.
Sorry this was bit rambly, but I hope you enjoyed reading it.
What about you? Do you enjoy listening to audiobooks or do you like reading the physical book? Let me know in the comments.
