Book Blogger Hop

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. It was relaunched on February 15, 2013 by Billy@Coffee Addicted Writer. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog. 

This week’s prompt: Do you have a bookish pet peeve? If so what is it?

So, How long do you have? I have many pet peeves but I don’t want to bore you with all of them so I decided to just choose the one that bugs me the most.

Swearing

Now I am not talking about your average swear word in any given book. I use them, I am fine with others using swears, and I am fine with characters using them. My issue is mostly with high fantasy characters using common contemporary swear words. If you are going to take the trouble to create this elaborate world, with its own mythology and magical system, please take the time to create some swear words. Nothing takes me out of a story quicker than a character using the f word, while hanging out in some fantastical setting. Its just wrong.

It can also bug me sometimes in science fiction, but that depends on the setting. I just can’t see that we would still be using the same swears hundreds of years in the future. But I could be wrong. Some of ours have been around for quite a while now.

Occasionally I will come across a book where I feel that the swearing is a bit excessive. That can turn me off a story as well. This type of story is usually a contemporary one, but it just feels like every tenth word is a swear. Just doesn’t work for me.
