A 2024 Challenge Update!

Another three months have gone by, so it is time to take a look at how I am doing on my challenges. I am still right on track to finishing them, which I am excited about. So far all of the books I have been picking for my challenges have been really good, which makes it so much easier to keep going. I am also pleasantly surprise that I have continued to read nonfiction books. I think my original goal was 8 books, but I have now read 9. I have picked out at least two more to finish off the year, and am still looking for a third.

Buzzword Reading Challenge

July’s Prompt: Book with ‘measurement’ words in the Title

*49 Miles Alone was a great desert thriller that pushed the reality boundary just a little bit.

August’s Prompt: The word ‘like’ in the title

Girls Like Us was also a really good psychological thriller that was very hard to put down.

September Prompt: Words related to the ‘senses’

Still See You Everywhere was another really good psychological thriller, although I did not like it as much as the first two books in the series.

Epic Reading Challenge

July’s Prompt: A book known to make people cry

A Man Called Ove didn’t make me cry, but only because I had seen the movie. Still loved it though.

August’s Prompt: A Diverse/Gender swapped retelling

*The Thirteenth Child was a really fabulous retelling of the Godfather Death fairy tale.

September’s Prompt: A book based on your favorite season

What Feasts at Night takes place in the fall and was somewhat gory and scary. Still loved it though.

NonFiction reading Challenge

This one doesn’t have a monthly prompt, you just read nonfiction books based on a list of categories.

*The Legendary Toad’s Place (Culture) was a great book about the music culture in New Haven, Ct., which is where I grew up.

*Sticky Notes (Memoir) a very short but great look at the memorable times the author shared with his students.

*While Idaho Slept (True Crime) is about one of the worst crimes imaginable. Four students murdered for no apparent reason.

Picture of the Month Challenge

This is just a fun challenge that I have been doing that gives me an opportunity to share some pictures that I take during the year. It is also a bingo game, which I have done once and am very close to completing another one (or maybe two) by the end of the year.

July: Yellow

St. John’s Wort: A pretty common flower on my morning walks and I was able to catch a bee collecting pollen as well.

August: Zounds!

Zucchini: I found these giant zucchini at the farmers market one Saturday. I was shocked at how big they were and how cheap too!

September: Dappled Light

Japanese Maple: I took this picture one night after my art class and was thrilled it came out so lovely.

I pretty much have the rest of my challenge books sorted for the year, except for a couple for December, still haven’t made a final decision on those. I have really enjoyed doing these challenges and look forward to doing more in 2025! Until next time…
