First Lines Friday

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Got it? Okay let’s go! Here is the quote…

“He didn’t exist. That’s the headline. It’s a disappointing start, I know, but it’s an early sign of how tricky history can be.”

Do you know this one?

I’ll bet you will never guess this one…

What do you think?

Have you guessed?

Yes? No?

Give up?

Here it is!

Unruly: The Ridiculous History of England’s Kings and Queens

I was hoping to write the review for this audiobook today, but alas it wasn’t meant to be. I am so close to finishing this though that I hope to have the review done for tomorrow’s post. I have really been enjoying this ride through England’s history of rulers. I didn’t know that there was some lists and genealogy trees at the beginning of the book. Those would have been so helpful. I only discovered them when I went to Amazon to find the first line. Oh well, the perils of audiobook listening.
