First Lines Friday

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Got it? Okay let’s go! Here is the quote…

“Cold wind blew down the concrete halls, carrying the scents of stone and water. The rain had stopped at sunset, leaving the streets and walkways wet, but the air still carried its chill. Distant traffic and faraway voices blended into background noise, but here, in the heart of the city, I was alone.”

More of a first paragraph…

This is from the third book in a series

It is an urban fantasy

Have you guessed?

Yes? No?

Give up?

Here it is!

A Judgement of Powers

The super-rich control everything-including magic-in this thrilling and brilliant, contemporary fantasy from the author of the Alex Verus novels.

The wealthy seem to exist in a different, glittering world from the rest of us. Almost as if by . . . magic.

Stephen Oakwood is a young man on the edge of this hidden world. He has talent and potential, but turning that potential into magical power takes money, opportunity, and training. All Stephen has is a minimum wage job and a cat.

I loved the first two books in this series and I am really looking forward to picking this one up in the next day or two. If you are looking for an urban fantasy with a fascinating magical system and a main character that you will love, you must give this series a chance. Click on the titles below for my reviews of the first two books.

An Inheritance of Magic

An Instruction of Shadow
