About this picture: North Head Lighthouse, Cape Disappointment, WA
This lighthouse sits at the one of the most dangerous coastlines in the US and possibly the world. Hundreds of ships have wrecked here over the centuries. It is so dangerous that the Coast Guard trains their search and rescue crews here. This light house has stood proudly at the mouth of the Columbia river since 1897 and has saved countless lives. It is fully automated now. The Coast Guard turned over the ownership of the lighthouse and surrounding grounds to the Washington State Parks. So even though it is still operating and saving lives, you are allowed to visit and go up to the top and see some fantastic views. It is certainly worth the trip to see. I took this picture standing close to the base, but used the pano feature on my camera.
