Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Lainey at GingerReads and Samantha at Thoughts on Tomes. You can find the group on Goodreads.
This week’s topic:
Since it’s the first day of spring (in this hemisphere!), discuss books that remind you of spring, or genres you reach for in the spring, or books you plan on reading this spring!
I don’t generally choose books based on the season that much. I read what I feel like regardless of the time of year. So I decided to talk about books I’m looking forward to reading this Spring. But this ended up being a tough one to narrow down. I decided to strictly stick to books released between March 20th and June 20th, technically the season of spring. That helped, but I still have to add a bonus book.
1. Defy the Fates by Claudia Grey
Publication date: April 2, 2019
I have been rereading the first two books in anticipation of this finale book coming out. I love Abel, he is perhaps one of my favorite AI’s of all time. I also love the moral issues brought up in this series. Noemi is also a solid character with a lot of conflicting feelings for Abel. I really hope this all works out for the best for both of them, but I have a feeling it won’t.
2. Storm of Locusts by Rebecca Roanhorse
Publication date: April 23, 2019
The first book in this series was one of my favorites of 2018, and I can’t wait to see what happens in this one. Things were left so up in the air at the end of the first book which made it hard to be patient. Love the world building and the characters, though not as in love with this cover as I was the first book’s. Although I do want to know why the one girl in the background is in what looks like a wedding gown with a machine gun? Color me curious….
3. Finale by Stephanie Garber
Publication date: May 7, 2019
Is it just me or does it feel like we have been waiting forever for this finale book? I really want to read all three together, so depending on what else is going on reading wise, I may not get to this as quick as I want to. I will really have to work on the timing of my reading. I have seen a couple of early reviews from those lucky people able to get an ARC, and it sounds like it will be a perfect ending. And I just love that the cover is purple!
4. Dev1at3 by Jay Kristoff
Publication date: May 28, 2016
Another favorite read of 2018 was the first book in this series. I loved the Romanov retelling in a post apocalyptic world with all sorts of advanced tech. Plus how can you not like a character called Lemon Fresh? At least from the summary it sounds like this book’s focus is on her, which I am all in for. Hopefully Eve will be there as well. Not sure about this cover. That pink is a bit much, but the final cover might be okay.
5. The Red Scrolls of Magic by Cassandra Clare
Publication Date: April 9, 2019
I just realized that this one comes out during my spring break! Yes! I get to snuggle up with my favorite High Warlock and his very own book, well and Alec. I didn’t realize that this one does not take place after the Dark Artifices books but it is about a trip they take during the Mortal Instruments books, so it is more about the beginning of their relationship. Which I am excited for.
Bonus Book: Scorch Dragons by Amie Kaufman
Publication Date: March 6, 2019
I had to include this middle grade book because my students are just as excited about this book as I am. This one is focusing on the dragons, which you know I get excited about. The ice wolves are pretty cool too. A very interesting world and some great characters. Five stars for the cover too!
Even though I feel spring/summer is perfect for reading contemporaries, I’m a fantasy reader – I pretty much read fantasy all year. I’m really excited about Scorch Dragons. I still have to read the first book, but I love anything writing by Amie Kaufman.
Happy readings! 😉
