I’m totally stealing this idea from the Top 5 Tuesday group. Their topic last week was favorite reads under 300 pages. I am changing it up a bit though. With my summer quickly coming to a close, and school starting up again, I will soon find myself with less reading time. So I decided to look through my TBR to find some short reads that will help me keep to my reading goals. Here are the books that have now risen to the top of my TBR for September, not only because they are short, but they look really good too.

Hounded by Kevin Hearne

I saw a review for this book about six months ago and it really sounded like my cup of tea. A druid hiding out in the desert. An angry Celtic god after him. A vampire and werewolf team of attorneys! How can I go wrong with this? I really don’t know why I keep putting this one off. It is at the top of the list as of right now. And it is only 304 pages.
The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

I saw a lot of good reviews for this one when it first came out and I even bought a copy. But It was around the time that I sort of got tired of retellings so it has sat on my shelf ever since. But once I read her two middle grade novels, I am eager to pick this one up. I really like her writing style so I am sure this will be a winner. This one is a bit longer with 312 pages, but I heard it is a fast read.
Rise of the Crow by Jeremiah Franklin

I picked up a copy of this at the last conference I attended. I really was drawn to the cover and the description. It hasn’t had a lot of reviews, and the average rating on Goodreads is only 3.6, but maybe it will be a dark horse and rise to the top of my favorites of the year. We shall see, and at only 295 pages it should go pretty quickly.
Witches Abroad by Terry Pratchett

I haven’t been writing reviews for these lately but I am still trying to read one a month. This one I remember as being a good one. It is a fairy tale and the ones involving Granny Weatherwax always make me laugh. It is also only 305 pages and usually a pretty quick read.
Desdemona and the Deep by C.S.E. Cooney

This is the shortest one the list, coming in at 224 pages. I saw a review of this on Pages Below the Vaulted Sky and she made it sound so good that I immediately put a hold on it at my local library. Check out her review. It might make you want to read it too. It appears to be part of a series, but according to the author you don’t have to have read the other ones to enjoy this one. Which is a good thing. My library doesn’t have the other ones. Depending on how this one goes, I may start looking for copies of the other books in the series.
Those are the shortish books I will be reading in September. I am pretty pleased with my choices. Still have two weeks before school starts, so hopefully I will be able to get some longer books done before then. Are there other short books I should be considering? Which would you recommend I read first? Let me know in the comments.
I’m so glad to see Desdemona on here!! And is it part of a series? I didn’t know that!

I think it is more of a companion book. Set in the same world but different characters. All three seem to be that way though. There might be a connection between them all too. But the author said you didn’t have to read the others to enjoy this one, so I’m trusting her.
