Summary from Goodreads:

Long-banished dragons, revered as gods, return to the mortal realm in the first in this magical new epic fantasy trilogy from a bestselling author
Long ago, humans betrayed dragons, stealing their magic and banishing them to a dying world. Centuries later, their descendants worship dragons as gods. But the gods remember, and they do not forgive.
Thief Arcady scrapes a living on the streets of Vatra. Desperate, Arcady steals a powerful artifact from the bones of the Plaguebringer, the most hated person in Lumet history. Only Arcady knows the artifact’s magic holds the key to a new life among the nobles at court and a chance for revenge.
The spell connects to Everen, the last male dragon foretold to save his kind, dragging him through the Veil. Disguised as a human, Everen soon learns that to regain his true power and form and fulfil his destiny, he only needs to convince one little thief to trust him enough to bond completely–body, mind, and soul–and then kill them.
Yet the closer the two become, the greater the risk both their worlds will shatter.

Confession:
The thing I really liked the most about this book was the world building. It was very well done and it was such a different world that I was intrigued by it almost from the start. I will admit that I was a bit confused at first, but once I got it I found it to be very clever and an interesting world. I also appreciated that there was no info dump perse, just Everen getting explanations from people as he learned to navigate this new world.
I enjoyed the two main characters Everen and Arcady. They were both characters that I could like and get behind. They also both had their flaws and were both somewhat morally gray. They had their struggles, and I enjoyed reading their journeys to overcome them both together and apart. The smattering of chapters from other characters involved in the story added some insights into the world and to what was going on outside of what was happening with the two main characters.
The plot was also quite captivating, once you get past the slow start. I loved the heist and the slow romance that built between Everen and Arcady. There was a lot going on throughout the book with some subplots and twists that made it all work towards the spectacular end. The world building was also built into the story and you learn alot about how the dragons became revered as gods, and some of what really happened between humans and dragons.
If you enjoy dragon stories and are looking for one with an interesting twist on dragons and a world that will captivate you then you really should give this book a try. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next.
I found this one slow to get into at first but then I really loved it. I can’t wait to see what happens next after that ending.
