First Lines Friday

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Got it? Okay let’s go! Here is the quote…

“Life goes on — which I have always felt was rude on life’s part.”

Do you know this one?

It’s a new book that just came out this month…

It is a historical fantasy that is also a mystery…

Have you guessed?

Yes? No?

Give up?

Here it is!

rook by William Jackaby

This is a standalone, but is set in the Jackaby world. It features a plucky young heroine by the name of Abigail, who solves mysteries in her small New England town. I loved the series and I am really looking forward to reading this new adventure. Because it is a standalone. I don’t know for sure if you needed to have read the other books first. It has been about 5 years since the last book in the series came out, and I haven’t read this one yet, but hopefully it will be like visiting with friends I haven’t seen in awhile.

Have you read the Jackaby series? Let me know in the comments.
