Holmes, Marple and Poe by James Patterson and Brian Sitts
Narrated by Christine Lakin
Confession:

This audiobook was a lot of fun to listen to. Ms. Lakin does a good job bringing all of the characters to life, and giving them distinct voices and emotions that fit them all very well.
It is a fast paced and action packed story of three private detective, who just happen to have the same last names as some very famous characters, both fictional and real. I loved all three of these detectives and enjoyed watching them solve many cases in this book. They all have personalities that are based on the originals. Holmes has an addiction problem, Poe is an alcoholic and Marple is an introvert. All like their namesakes. But they are most certainly not the originals, but who they really are is one of the greatest mysteries of the story.
There are many cases to be solved throughout the story, the biggest being who are Holmes, Marple and Poe really? But even with the many cases and fast pace of the story, I never felt lost or confused about what was going on. I enjoyed many of the cases although most of them I solved way before the characters did. But it was still fun watching them find the clues and catch the bad guys. I also really liked all of the different characters that they encounter along the way, the good and the bad.
I really hope that this is a series that will go on for quite a few books. I don’t think I would ever get tired of watching this threesome solve crimes.

The Fury by Alex Michaelides
Narrated by Alex Jennings
Publication Date: January 16, 2024
Confession:

I loved this book and I totally get why it has been getting so much attention lately. It was super twisty with unlikable characters and a narrator that you couldn’t be sure was reliable or not.
Alex Jennings does a marvelous job with the narration as well. He has a voice that was just perfect for this almost noir story. He also does a good job of having different voices for all of the various characters. I would definitely pick up another book narrated by him.
The story is one that really needs to be experienced going in pretty blind. It is mostly told by Elliot, but there are times when other characters tell part of the story. I initially liked Elliot, but as the story unfolds I began to suspect that he wasn’t always a reliable narrator. We get quite a bit of backstory on all of the characters, which was amazing considering how short this book is. They all have their parts to play in this story, and they all do it well.
This is on the surface a murder mystery, but it is also a love story and there is a bit of a psychological thriller as well. Childhood trauma also plays a big part in the characters motivations and also in the final tragedy itself. It is pretty fast paced and quite and engaging read, I had a hard time putting it down. I really enjoyed the author’s writing style and will be looking for other books by him in the future.
A really great read and listen and one that is deserving of all the hype. If you are looking for a great story about some unlikable people and an unreliable narrator than this is the book you must read.
