First Lines Friday

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Got it? Okay let’s go! Here is the quote…

“Place ten dozen hungry orphan thieves in a dank burrow of vaults and tunnels beneath what used to be a graveyard, put them under the supervision of one partly crippled old man, and you will soon find that governing them becomes a delicate business.”

Do you know this one?

It is the third book in an old yet popular series…

We have all been waiting a long time for the fourth book…

Have you guessed?

Yes? No?

Give up?

Here it is!

The Republic Of Thieves by Scott Lynch

What a great cover! I enjoyed this third installment in this series, but not as much as the other two. I really hope we get the next book soon, it has been ten years since this one was published. As far as I can tell the next one is written, just not published. The author seems to be having some health issues and I am sure covid didn’t help either, but hopefully there will be an announcement at some point to its release. Look for my review for this book and the other two in the series, sometime today. Until next time…

Happy Reading!
