First Lines Friday

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Got it? Okay let’s go! Here is the quote…

“Once upon a time, at the very dawn of summer, on the loneliest road in the woods, the daughter of Death and Fortune came to a crossroads.”

Do you know this one?

It is the final book in a fantasy series.

It just came out recently.

Have you guessed?

Yes? No?

Give up?

Here it is!

Holy Terrors by Margaret Owen

I read this back in March as an ARC and really struggled with it. Mostly I think because I just didn’t remember enough about the first two books and there were just too many new characters to keep track of. So I decided to reread the first two books and then read the collection of short stories that take place before this book and then come around and reread this one. I am now better prepared for this one and I am really hoping that I will enjoy it more.
