First Lines Friday

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Got it? Okay let’s go! Here is the quote…

“Pain is a fire. That’s true for all of the people, some of the time. If you’ve never had to stand in that fire, be patient. Your turn is coming.”

Do you know this one?

Pretty ominous start…

Kind of sad too...

Have you guessed?

Yes? No?

Give up?

Here it is!

Twelve Months by Jim Butcher

This is the 18th book in this series, so you don’t want to start with this one. But if you are looking for a great urban fantasy series then The Dresden Files is one you want to read. I love this series and this one was one of the best of them.
