Audiobook Reviews

Happy Friday everyone. Today I am bringing you two audiobook reviews. Both of these were good, but very different from each other. Let’s get to it shall we?

My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix

Read by Emily Woo Zeller

Publication Date: May 2016

This book was a lot of fun for a horror book. It was set in 1988 and the author did an awesome job of bringing that era to life. I loved all of the references to movies, music, and the general atmosphere of the time. The teenage girls involved were spot on in their dialog and attitudes. The narrator did a great job of voicing them as well. She totally got the voices and attitudes correct for the time period.

I don’t know if there is a genre for comedy horror, but there should be and this book would be at the top of the list. Yes, there were some scenes that were scary and horrifying, but there was a lot of humor inside those scenes that made them somehow less horrific? The whole exorcism scene was a perfect example. If you have ever seen the movie you know what a gore fest it it. This scene sort of mirrors it, but it is also funny, especially at the end.

If you are a fan of horror or of the author then this is a book you should give a chance. If you aren’t into horror, but like funny books set in the late 1980’s this could also be a good book for you. If none of these things are true, then still give this one a chance, it mind change your mind about horror.

The Fate of Magic by Sara Raasch and Beth Revis

Book 2 in the Witch and Hunter duology

Read By Kirby Heyborne, Andrea Emmes and Gregory Abbey

Publication Date: October 1, 2024

This was a solid conclusion to this fantasy duology. My only real issue was it seemed to move pretty slowly and the overall feel to the book was pretty flat. The readers all did a good job with bringing the characters to life, especially Kirby Heyborne who did the part of Otto, and with keeping me interested in the characters and the story. I’m not sure that would have happened if I was reading the story instead of listening to it.

I did like the overall plot of the story. But the urgency and the fear and rage that the characters experienced in the first book, seemed to be missing in this one. But there was nice overall growth in both Otto and Fritzi’s characters and I was rooting for them to survive to the end of the book. I loved the scenes where Fritzi and sometimes Otto confronted the goddesses. The three goddesses were all so different and their interest in what was unfolding very different than what I might have expected. The ending of the story was also good, but maybe a bit rushed.

If you read the first book and enjoyed it, then for sure pick this one up. It was a good ending to the first book. If you haven’t picked this duology up, do give it a chance. It is a great fantasy world with some great characters, even if this book felt a little bit flat.

Well I hoped you enjoyed reading my reviews. These were both good books and worth reading, or at least adding to your TBR. Until next time…

Happy Reading!
