Expanding My Horizons

Bookish Thoughts

After I posted two weeks ago about reading too much fantasy, I started thinking about ways to get some other genres into my reading life.

I am always telling my students to expanded their horizons, in other words read something different than that copy of Wimpy Kid you have read at least ten times that you are currently checking out.  I decided that I needed to take my own advice and find some books I might be interested in that are not fantasy or even science fiction, my main two genres.

I mostly use Goodreads as a way to track my reading, but not much else.  I decided to give the recommendation section a try.  I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked and I was able to find a few titles that I have added to the top of my TBR list.

All Covers are linked to their Goodreads summaries.

Mystery/Thrillers

I used to read a lot of Mystery/Thrillers, but I have moved away from them in the last few years.  These three are all series and all sound pretty awesome.

Find MeNearly Gone

Shade Me

Contemporary

This is probably the genre I read the least,  I usually only pick up rom/com types.  Still I was able to find a few that sounded like I might enjoy them.  I have even added the first to my NetGalley list, so I will at least read that one.  The last one also is a bit of a mystery, but that is ok.  (I know the first two are still romcoms, but hey small steps.)

Going Off Script    Only thing  heartsick

Historical Fiction

Except for a handful, most of the historical fiction I have read has some fantasy or a supernatural aspect it to them.   It was hard to find ones that I thought I would be interested in that didn’t have fantasy elements, but I finally did.  (at least I don’t think they do?  The last one might have a little bit, but I’m trying!)

Palace of Spies

Unspeakable Gypsy King

I’m a little more excited about some of these than the others, but I think I will at least give them all a try.

What is your least favorite genre?  Have you read any of these?  Have  any other recommendations for me?

  1. What a great idea! I tend to mostly read fantasy as well but I’ve been on a kick of historical fiction recently and I’ve been really enjoying it. I also find that I get through non-fantasy books so much faster (probably because most fantasy I pick up is 600+ pages). A bunch of people have been talking about it for a while now in the bookosphere but I’d definitely recommend reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo if you haven’t already. It’s not like anything I normally read but it blew me away (definitely deserves all the hype). I hope you find a new favourite genre/book by doing this, good luck!

Ooh, good luck! I definitely read too much fantasy (not helped by Fantasy February) so branching out is something I really need to do… these look great!

This is awesome! I also read very little Contemporary and Historical Fiction. They’re both genres that are very hit or miss for me… but I LOVE mysteries and thrillers! 🙂 If you need recommendations, feel free to check out my blog 😀
